House of Cards font — Bourgeois Bold Condensed for “HOUSE” and “CARDS,” Book Condensed Italic for “of” — deploys a clean, sharp condensed sans-serif with the same calculating precision that Frank Underwood brings to his political manoeuvres in Beau Willimon’s Netflix drama: the typography is authoritative without being warm, confident without being charming, and stripped of any ornamental quality that might suggest the series has any interest in being liked rather than respected. Netflix’s first major original drama series, which premiered in 2013 and established many of the aesthetic conventions that streaming prestige drama has followed since, needed title lettering that communicated Washington power in its most concentrated and least sentimental form. Two alternatives approach this cold political-authority register: Alternative 1 and Alternative 2.
