Fargo font — designed by Måns Grebäck — is the typography of a warm diner menu or a small-town newspaper: rounded, friendly, retro font that invites you in with the same cheerful decency that defines Minnesota nice, and then watches with calm interest as extremely violent things happen in the immediate vicinity. Noah Hawley’s FX anthology series, premiering in 2014 as a companion to the Coen Brothers’ 1996 film, needed typography that could hold the show’s fundamental tonal paradox: the surface is warm, familiar, and slightly comic; underneath is murder, moral collapse, and the specific darkness that flourishes in places where everyone is too polite to name what is actually happening.
The freely available Fargo Font channels this deceptively welcoming warmth.
