Shameless Font

Shameless font — based on Helvetica Neue Bold, one of the most widely deployed sans-serifs in the history of corporate and broadcast typography, here pressed into service for a show about the exact opposite of corporate life — is the typography of Showtime’s 2011–2021 series about the Gallagher family surviving poverty on Chicago’s South Side with a combination of fierce loyalty, creative resourcefulness, and a complete absence of the social deference that the title directly names. The choice of Helvetica Neue Bold for a show about working-class defiance is itself a kind of typographic joke: this is the font of institutions, of signage, of authority — and Shameless uses it in service of a family that has never had institutional support in their lives.
