The Last of Us Font

The Last of Us font carries the physical memory of a world that ended twenty years ago and hasn’t been maintained since — heavy, slab-serif block lettering with a weathered, eroded quality that communicates structural integrity still intact but surface texture thoroughly ravaged by time and exposure. HBO’s 2023 adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed game needed title typography that could hold both the tenderness of Joel and Ellie’s relationship and the absolute devastation of the cordyceps-infected world they move through, and the font’s combination of solid weight and distressed character achieves exactly that balance. Three alternatives approach this post-apocalyptic heavy serif from different angles: Headliner No. 45, Castle Press No. 2, and Birth of a Hero.
